2013 NSJ Day 1: Arrival @ The National Scout Jamboree

I served on the staff of the 2013 National Scout Jamboree in the Tech Quest area at the "Cloud".  I'm writing blog articles now in 2014 to document my experiences of a year ago.  I highly recommend serving on the staff of a National Scout Jamboree!

Day 1 for staff was July 11th, 2013.  The Scouts did not arrive until July 15th.  The staff used that time period to set up their program areas.  My program area was "Tech Quest".  Our mission was to exhibit various leading edge technologies.  Our exhibits were housed at an area called the "Cloud", aptly named because the area was located half way up a mountain!  Some days it seemed like we were in the clouds 8^)

The Jamboree was held at the brand new Summit Bechtel Reserve near Mt. Hope, WV.   Below is a map with the location of the reserve and a photo from that day:

On 7/11/2013, 6,224 staff members reported for duty at the Summit Bechtel Reserve.  They arrived by air and shuttles, bus and by car.  Many of the staff were directed to park their cars & trucks at a place called "Dead Storage."  Driving into the site took some time, but it also gave us a preview of the jamboree.  Finally we reached the Dead Storage lots where we would park our vehicles for the duration of the Jamboree.  The lots were located on the top of a mountain, with a gorgeous view!

After parking, we boarded school buses that took us to Echo Base where we would register.  After registration we took off with our duffle bags to find our tents.  We settled in.  Some went to check on their work areas.
