Day 16 - Mevagissey on May 19th, 2013

Great fun to explore, the small fishing village of Mevagissey is located on the southwestern coast of Cornwall.  Once upon a time, fishing was the major source of income for the town.  While still present, fishing has been replaced by tourism.  So much so that on weekends, it is difficult to drive through the narrow streets.  I do not recommend driving through Mevagissey unless you enjoy reversing 8^) We parked on the outskirts of town and walked in as do most tourists.

The village offers at least four ice cream shops that sell Cornish Ice Cream.  The ice cream, made with Cornish Clotted Cream and Cornish Milk, is noticeably creamier and slightly yellowish in color.  The unique taste is partly due to the higher level of buttermilk in the cream.  The fat content in clotted cream averages 64%.  In the United States, clotted cream would be classified as butter.

The safe harbour is divided into inner and outer portions.  In rough weather, fishing boats are moved into the inner harbour which provides more protection against storms.  A popular pastime is to sample the local ice cream while walking the wharves of the harbour.  There is plenty of places to eat and shop in the village.

The day we visited was cloudy, yet bright.  Such weather poses a problem for photographers.  Avoiding blown highlights in the sky is difficult.  I wish it had been a blue sky day!  Nevertheless, I gave it my best shot.
